Riot Games details its esports ambitions on Valorant
Riot Games has competition in blood and nobody will be surprised that the company has great esports ambitions for Valorant. Ambitions confirmed in an article by Magus, spokesman for the esports team within the game development team.
In this communiqué published on the official website of Valorant, he describes Riot Games’ philosophy in relation to the development of a competitive Valorant scene.
Internal thinking is therefore done around three points:
- Integrity, so that winners and losers are determined by their own game skill, not by external factors.
- Accessibility, in order to make competitions attractive both for the curious and for veteran players.
- Authenticity, letting players of each skill level shape their own experiences so they can express themselves freely.
It’s above all on the latter that Magus insists. Drawing on the experience acquires by Riot Games through League of Legends, he explains:
As part of our Authenticity principle, we want to let VALORANT grow naturally; we’re not looking to force anything too quickly without knowing what’s best for esports fans.Whalen 'Magus' Rozelle - Riot Games
Riot Games will first observe the players’ appetite for Valorant competitions and support even organisers. As such, they publish a document that lists all required conditions to establish a partnership with Riot Games, so that creators of tournaments or competitions can prepare as soon as possible.
Magus explains that he relies heavily on the development of an amateur scene, so that the most talented players naturally stand out. This is a first step, but Riot Games intends to support the game for " ten, twenty, thirty years", we can be sure that they have some projects in reserve.
It remains to be seen how the community will take Valorant from a competitive point of view. Many tournaments have already been organised and played, even though the game has only been available for two weeks. Many well-known teams in esports’ world have also started to recruit Valorant players. Suffice to say that all the signals seem positive regarding the establishment of a sustainable competitive scene.
