Format of the Mandatory Cup 2023

As the year draws to a close, Mandatory is organising a new Mandatory Cup part of the official circuit VCT OFF//SEASON. It will bring together some of the best teams from the VCL and the EMEA League, plus one team who will qualify via the Open Qualifier. Here is all the information about the format of the Open Qualifier, as well as that of the Main Event.


Format of the Open Qualifier

  • Swiss rounds - December 9 from 12pm CET,
    • BO1 matches,
    • Win: 2 points, Draw: 1 point, Loss: 0 points,
    • 8 teams qualify for the next round,
  • Playoffs - Quarter-finals, semi-finals and final - December 10 from 12pm CET
    • Single-elimination bracket,
    • Quarter-finals in BO1, semi-finals and final in BO3,
    • 1 team qualifies for the main event,
  • Map-pool - Ascent, Bind, Breeze, Haven, Lotus, Split, Sunset,

The Qualifier brings together a maximum of 66 teams. There are no level restrictions for taking part. This stage is divided into two times the Swiss rounds, followed by the playoffs. On the first day, the teams take part in six separate rounds. Each match is played in BO1. Matches earn points for a win (2 points) or a tie (1 point). Defeat does not award points.

The following day, the 8 best teams are placed in a single-elimination bracket. Quarters are played in BO1, while semi-finals and the final are BO3. The winning team gets his slot for the main event.

Main Event format

  • Group phase - December 13 from 6pm CET,
    • 4 groups of 3 teams,
    • BO2 matches,
    • Victory: 1 point, Defeat: 0 point,
    • 4 teams qualify for the next round,
  • Playoffs - Semi-finals and final - 14 and 19 December from 18:00 CET,
    • Single-elimination bracket,
    • Semi-finals in BO3 and final in BO5,
  • Map-pool - Ascent, Bind, Breeze, Haven, Lotus, Split, Sunset,

The Main Event brings together a total of twelve teams, Mandatory, 10 guest teams and the team that qualified through the Open Qualifier. It includes two stages : the group phase, followed by playoffs. On the first day, teams compete to finish top of their group and reach playoffs. Each match is played in BO2. During this phase, each victory earns 1 point, while a defeat does not. Only the best teams progress to the play-offs. There are four groups, which means four qualifiers..

For the playoffs, the four teams are placed in a single-elimination bracket. Semi-finals are played in BO3. The final is played in BO5. The winning team pockets the entire cash prize of 15 000€.
