100 Thieves splits with Nitr0
The news just came out, 100 Thieves is parting ways with its player Nicholas "nitr0" Cannella, an important member of the team for almost a year and a half.
Former CS:GO player, nitr0 joined 100 Thieves on Valorant in August 2020. This is an opportunity for him to meet up with one of his former mates, Spencer "Hiko" Martin, which whom he had played on CS:GO in 2015 as part of Team Liquid.
The roster quickly proved itself and won the First Strike North America. Announced as one of the favourite teams for the year 2021, 100 Thieves did not manage to consolidate the success it had achieved in the last quarter of 2020. The results during the regional competitions were not very good and some changes of players were quickly made. In the space of a few months, Ethan replaced dicey, Silenx was released from his contract and b0i took the place of steel.
The second half of the year proved more promising and the team achieved several top 2 and 3 in the following months, as well as a top 4 at the Berlin Masters. Qualified for the Last Chance Qualifier NA, the roster was defeated in the Upper Bracket final by Rise, then by Cloud9 Blue in the Lower Bracket final, and finished third place. Having failed to secure a slot for the Valorant Champions, the team ended their VCT season with this performance.
After this defeat, rumours started to suggest that nitr0 could be replaced. It's now official, he will not play with 100 Thieves for the next season, and might even return to CS:GO in 2022. Nothing is confirmed yet, but the player is expected to speak about his future soon, as he posted on his Twitter account.
This is already the fourth player to be let go by the team in the space of two weeks. Dicey and b0i left the team at the end of November, and nitr0's departure comes just two days after steel's, who joined T1. The roster is emptying of players, but the organisation has not yet made any announcement regarding recruitment. We can't wait to know who will join them for the next VCT season.
