Meeting with Ninjas in Pyjamas – Road to Mandatory.GG Cup

29th July 2020 - 1:40pm

A few days before the Ignition Series x Mandatory.GG Cup, we wanted to measure the temperature on the side of the teams that will participate to the competition. Today, we met HyP, newly recruited in Ninjas in Pyjamas.

The former HypHypHyp captain signed with Ninjas in Pyjamas with two of his teammates, Fearoth and Crea^. The brand new line-up, already the second for Ninjas in Pyjamas, still needs a lot of work to catch up with giants like G2 Esports and Fish123. No problem, Hyp and his mates seem to have a good head on their shoulders.

Mandatory: The new Ninjas in Pyjamas line-up is very young! How did you get closer?

HyP: It's thanks to NiP, but also to Jerome who represents us, Fearoth, Crea and me! I knew rhyme and Luckeer only from the competitions I played against them. Rhyme, especially, marked me early in the game when he was already playing with NiP. He performed very well on Omen back then. Regarding luckeer, he marked me during the Twitch Rivals which I played alongside ZeratoR and Mandatory, but I didn't know them any better than that before joining NiP.

Mandatory: It's your second tournament with this team. Do you think you are ready or are you still taking your marks?

HyP: I think it would be a lie to say that we are ready. We've only been playing for 2 weeks, and during these 2 weeks, the WePlay! Invitational of the Ignition Series took place. It was spread over several days, so we were unable to play and work as much as we would like. I would say that we are progressing very well, but we're still taking our marks anyway.

Mandatory: Did this new team force you to review your strategies and your play style?

HyP: Yes, for example with didn't have a Cypher or Sage player. So we have players who had to adapt and learn to master new agents. Regarding our strategies and our play style, we try to recover the style we had with HypHypHyp. But the game is very young and therefore necessarily, the strategies are developing day after day. It takes a lot of work to evolve that much, if not more than other teams.

Mandatory: Three of you already played the final against Fish123 during the first Mandatory Cup. Do you think your chances of winning are higher this time?

HyP: Back then, Fish123 was unbeatable. However, I think that, right now, no team is unbeatable. And this despite the domination of several tournaments by G2 Esports. Right now, we're capable of winning against all the teams, just as losing. The Mandatory.GG x Ignition Series tournament contains a lot of BO1s, and you can very quickly be surprised by a team you don't know. So yes, we have a better chance of winning this time, just as we can stop in the first round because the BO1 format is cruel and it can end badly very quickly.

Mandatory: What do you think of the Ignition formats and the different formats offered by different structures?

HyP: I love the format! Tournament formats are different depending on the structures that organise them. And that allows us to have several tournaments quite regularly, which is super important for the competitive scene. This is a very important learning phase for us, players, and daily entertainment for all fans who want to watch Valorant competitions.

Mandatory: Which team do your fear the most?

HyP: G2 has proven in recent tournaments that they are the furthest ahead of other teams. I think they are far from unbeatable, they are just ahead of the crowd right now. They are clearly the favourites for the Mandatory tournament, but I would say Fish123 is the team I fear the most. They are very strong and know us very well thanks to this rivalry that we have maintained throughout the beta.

But we're scared of no one, whether it's G2 or Fish123, it's always exciting to play against them. The matches are always interesting and high-level, and it's a pleasure to play these games.

Mandatory: Is there an international team you would like to play against?

HyP: I would like to face Sentinels and especially Sinatraa. They won PAX and obviously are one of the best teams in NA right now. But it's more about taking my revenge on Sinatraa who beat me so many times on Overwatch!
