Riot Games has announced a brand new map for Valorant: Fracture. This seventh map is very special and will shake up the way Valorant is played.
Fracture is a map that lies between the two dimensions, revealed in the Duality cinematic. The map is cut in two by a huge rift, and you pass from one dimension to the other by crossing a bridge in its centre. One part of the map is therefore in a lush jungle, the other in an arid desert.
In a press release, the map designers point out that Fracture is a key map for understanding the lore of Valorant and that many clues and objects that can be interacted with will reveal more about these two dimensions.
In terms of gameplay, Fracture looks like a classic map on paper, with two locations to attack/defend. However, things will not be that simple.
The specificity of Fracture comes from its H-shaped structure. There is a central point and 4 lanes, interconnected by zip lines, which lead to this central point. The twist is that defenders start at this famous central point, while attackers are separated and start at the ends. Site A is in the arid zone, Site B in the tropical zone.
This original layout was partly born of a desire to break the codes of the genre... but was also inspired by Lord of the Rings. Indeed, Joe Lansford, level designer of the map, says he based himself on the battle of the Helm's Deep. It took a lot of testing and tweaking to come up with the final structure and to make that structure possible.
We'll have to make do with this information until we can actually play the map! It should be out next week, but because we like you (and because Riot Games invited us to try the map), we'll show it in detail this week!
