StarCraft Remastered - Game of the ZLAN 2024

After a short diversions into the age of knights, ZLAN is heading back into space with this year's strategy game. That's right, StarCraft Remastered will be one of the ZLAN 2024 ! The licence had not appeared at ZLAN since the first edition in 2019, with StarCraft 2.

What is StarCraft Remastered?

StarCraft Remastered, released in 2017, is a revival of the original StarCraft and its Brood War expansion, which were released in 1998. This real-time strategy game was originally a Sci-Fi version of Warcraft. It met with great critical and popular success at a time when Internet connections were becoming more and more widespread, making it one of the most popular games of its time. one of the first esports games. This craze has only grown with its sequel, StarCraft 2, which has long been the most prestigious competition on the esports scene.

StarCraft's popularity is due in no small part to the diversity of situations it offers. Players can take control of 3 different breeds Terrans, Protoss and Zerg, each with their own units, buildings and properties. A Terran versus Zerg match is not the same as a Terran versus Protoss match. The possible combinations are all the more numerous when you have up to 8 players on many different maps and when these players can form teams. What's more, StarCraft is an extremely fast-paced game, where macro and micro management make the difference between a player's victory and defeat. The speed of action is so important that professional players are measured by their APM (the number of actions performed per minute).

StarCraft Remastered is the re-release of the very first StarCraft and its expansion. Above all, it's a complete facelift for the sprites and the game interface. There are no no balancing update or added features. The only differences are in the game's resolution (the original was played at 640×480 pixels, while the Remastered edition allows widescreen viewing), and changes to the keyboard shortcuts.

Getting started on StarCraft Remastered and preparing for ZLAN 2024

The qualities you need to play StarCraft Remastered

  • Be quick-witted and take decisions quickly
  • Establish strategies quickly
  • Excellent adaptability

Let's face it, if you've never played StarCraft before ZLAN, you won't have enough time in a month to compete with the game's biggest pros. We recommend that beginners concentrate on one race and one or two different game plans, depending on your opponents.

The best-known strategy, which tends to dominate unprepared beginners, is Zergling Rush. Its aim is to finish the game very quickly by rushing the enemy base as soon as possible in order to kill the enemy workers. The enemy is then paralysed and you can destroy his base with a swarm of basic units. The advantage of this strategy is that it's easy to apply and avoids having to prepare other, longer strategies that would give your opponent time to establish his own.

For Terran players, we recommend playing the Ghosts. These powerful units appear and disappear at will, and can easily wreak havoc on players unprepared for this type of assault. They work all the better in tandem with more conventional units, which act as a diversion on one front while the ghosts discreetly eliminate their targets on another.

Finally, on the Protoss side, Photon Cannon rush is an extremely risky strategy against skilled players, but a devastating one if your opponent is unaware of your plan. It involves placing a Pylon close to enemy lines in order to build Photon Cannons within range of your opponents. These cannons are very powerful long-range turrets, which are also capable of revealing even invisible units. An informed player won't let you create your Pylon, but you should be able to surprise more than one ZLAN participant with it.

It should be noted, however, that these strategies work mainly in a 1v1 context. The ZLAN will most likely feature battles with more than 2 players on the maps. For these scenarios, you'll have to do your best to adapt.
